Multicountry Programming Framework for the Pacific Islands (the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu)

The Multicountry Programming Framework for the Pacific Islands (Pacific CPF) 2023–2027 is a strategic plan designed by the FAO to drive agrifood systems transformation and rural development in the Pacific Islands. It builds upon the achievements and lessons learned from the previous 2018–2022 Pacific CPF, emphasizing stakeholder engagement, programmatic approach, and sustainability. Derived from the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the Pacific Islands (Pacific UNSDCF) 2023–2027, the Pacific CPF aligns with FAO’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and focuses on key SDGs such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Life below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). By leveraging partnerships and prioritizing sustainable practices, this framework aims to address the unique challenges faced by the Pacific Islands and contribute to their long-term development.

Agrifood chains in Asia and the Pacific

In Asia and the Pacific, all actors along the agrifood chain, from farmers to agro-industries and retailers, are increasingly using digital technologies to generate, store and process data and turn information into insights. By using a value-chain approach, it becomes evident for policymakers that not all agrifood chains digitalize at the same speed and therefore require tailored digital policies and strategies. The approach also helps identify critical entry points along the value chain for promoting the digitalization of smallholders and small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs). The value-chain lens also sheds light on what drives digital transformation: changes in consumer demographics, technological factors, behaviour and preferences, and changes in the broader environment, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, venture capital and increased pressure on natural resources.

Agrifood systems transformation through circular migration between Pacific island countries and Australia

Among Australia’s neighbours in Pacific island countries, the COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated a sudden and protracted decrease in external sources of income, such as tourism. The loss of external income has further amplified the social and economic challenges in a region fighting a rapidly changing climate and deteriorating food security.

Conservation Agriculture and Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems in Pacific Countries

The project addressed core issues such as the urgent need to enhance the productivity, sustainability, and resilience of agri-food systems in Pacific Island countries in the context of climate change. At the same time, it assessed greenhouse gas emissions from the sector and developed practical options for reduction that could result in emissions credits.

Domestication and breeding of sandalwood in Fiji and Tonga

This project aimed to establish the foundation for conservation and domestication of native sandalwood (S. yasi) in Fiji and Tonga to support the development of a sustainable industry. Although inbreeding has negative consequences for plantations established with seed from local seed sources, ongoing demand for high-quality sandalwood and sandalwood oil creates an opportunity to develop a sustainable, planted resource in Fiji and Tonga.

Reinforcing Pacific Food Systems for COVID-19 recovery – key impacts, responses and opportunities to build back better

The COVID-19 pandemic has elevated the importance of agriculture in the Pacific Islands for food security and economic development. The crisis has underscored the crucial role of domestic food systems to provide resilience to shocks, livelihood options, self-sufficiency, and insurance against food and nutrition insecurity. However, remoteness from international markets, populations dispersed across many small islands, heightened vulnerability to climate change, and natural resource constraints pose significant challenges for adapting food systems to cope with the impacts of COVID-19.
