Manual 06: High-Yield Potato Variety: Gala
This comprehensive agricultural manual was developed by the Republic of Uzbekistan Ministry of Agriculture and the National Center for Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture (AKIS) in collaboration with the Asian Food & Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI). It provides step-by-step agrotechnical recommendations for cultivating the high-yield, medium-early German potato variety Gala, optimized for Uzbekistan’s irrigated farming systems.
The document highlights the economic and biological characteristics of Gala: a medium-early maturing variety with a 70–90-day vegetation period, semi-upright plants, round-oval tubers with smooth yellow skin and light-yellow flesh. With a starch content of 12–14 %, the variety resists darkening after cooking and stores well, achieving yields of 40–55 tons per hectare under proper management. It also shows strong field resistance to Y virus and black scurf.
The manual concludes with protocols for seed potato production, ensuring genetic purity and virus‑free material for propagation. Overall, it aims to help Uzbek farmers adopt modern, sustainable, and profitable practices for large‑scale Gala potato cultivation.
