Manual 04: High-Yield Tomato Varieties: Vining and Balaban
This agricultural manual, developed by the Republic of Uzbekistan Ministry of Agriculture and the National Center for Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture (AKIS) in partnership with the Asian Food & Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI), provides detailed agronomic guidelines for cultivating two high-performance tomato varieties: Vining and Balaban. Both varieties are specifically adapted to Uzbekistan’s irrigated farming systems and continental climate, making them suitable for both open-field and greenhouse production.
The document introduces the economic and biological characteristics of each variety. Vining is a medium-early, semi-determinate variety known for its 180–250 gram glossy, red fruits and 80–120 tons/ha yield, ideal for fresh consumption and processing. Balaban, by contrast, is an indeterminate and high-yield hybrid type producing firm, uniform, deep red fruits weighing 220–350 grams, yielding 90–140 tons/ha, resistant to nematodes and verticillium wilt, and suitable for transportation and storage.
