Module 05: Strengthening the Management Capacity of POSLUHDES
Goat and Sheep Farming Management
This module, authored by Dayat Hermawan from the Balai Besar Pelatihan Kesehatan Hewan (BBPKH) Cinagara, is part of a national initiative led by the Badan Standardisasi Instrumen Pertanian (BSIP) under the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with AFACI. It introduces comprehensive and practical guidance on breeding, feeding, housing, reproduction, and health management for goats and sheep in village-level agricultural extension programs (POSLUHDES).
The training content includes nutritional management—covering the balance between Hijauan (forage) and Konsentrat (concentrate)—and emphasizes feed efficiency, water requirements, and nutrient standards to optimize livestock productivity. It describes daily management systems, from feeding and sanitation to disease prevention, highlighting common issues such as Scabies, Pink eye, and digestive bloating, along with prevention and treatment methods.
Also detailed are housing standards (including panggung-model stilt pens), breeding management (estrus detection, mating schedules, pregnancy care), and postnatal care. The module explains goat and sheep breeds suitable for local farming—such as Kambing Kacang, Peranakan Etawa (PE), Domba Garut, and Domba Ekor Gemuk—and provides best practices for both meat and dairy production.
A special section introduces the use of traditional herbal tonics (jamu) to improve animal growth, immunity, and meat quality. By integrating local knowledge with scientific management, the module aims to build farmers’ capacity in sustainable small ruminant production and strengthen POSLUHDES as a hub for livestock innovation and extension services.
